HTC's bootloader-unlocked version of its flagship One M9, the One M9 Developer Edition, is reportedly receiving its update to Android 5.1 Lollipop. The update isn't yet reflected in the ROM list on HTC's website, but a writer at AndroidCentral has been able to pull it and commenters are indicating it's arriving on their units, too.
According to the changelog, this is everything coming with the update, the standard 5.1 changes included:
- Android Lollipop 5.1
- Data Performance Improvements
- Call Drop Improvements
- Battery Life Enhancements
- Temperature Management Optimization
- Camera Enhancements
The temperature management optimization and camera enhancements should be of particular interest to owners of the M9, and may help to alleviate concerns from skeptical potential owners. The One M9 initially received the blunt of the criticism against Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 for reported overheating issues, although it's known now that most of initial overheating in the M9 was in pre-release review units, and there haven't been widespread reports of it in the device since launch. The phone did, however, produce very washed out photos before a recent update, with some reporting that blue and yellow hues appeared in pictures taken under harsh conditions.
The One M9 Developer Edition is different from the standard or unlocked HTC One M9 in that the bootloader is unlocked by default, meaning owners of the device can easy replace the pre-installed Android OS with different forks, or flavors of the operating system. An "unlocked" One M9 differs from a standard One M9 you might purchase from a carrier store in that it can be used on whatever carriers the bands inside support, simply by swapping out SIM cards.
